present an interesting consideration in criminal justice. Police officers are in a position to make a very real difference in the lives of troubled youth. Whether they will
make a positive difference or a negative one, however, varies according to how they perceive a situation and deal with it. Admittedly, policing juveniles can be complex.
This is particularly the case when it is complicated by a number of misperceptions. The sad truth of the matter is that many misperceptions are out there. Juveniles,
for example, are often presented as being more prone to crime than are adults. Illicit drug use and the other types of crime that go along with it in
particular is typically associated with juveniles. In reality, however, it is adults that are using drugs the most and adults that are committing the most drug-related crimes. When considering
the various theories that attempt to address juvenile delinquency, a common theme of deviance seems to emerge. It is important to note, however, as Clinnard and Meier (2007)
insist, that to full understand deviance we must first recognize the contradiction that there is no societal consensus that "reliably identifies behavior, people, or conditions that are deviant" (3).
