2.9 percent are Asians * 1 percent represent other groups (Newman, 1998, p. 231). These proportions vary dramatically between states. They also change almost daily as more people immigrate to the U.S. and more are born into the different groups already living in this country (Newman, 1998). Newman argues that in order to appreciate cultural diversity, one must understand the concept of culture. Newman offers three slightly different definitions/descriptions of the concept of culture: * Culture is an integrated system of learned patterns of behavior, ideas and products characteristic of a society. It is a philosophy of life and death. Culture is passed on from generation to generation as beliefs, values and mores by parents, other family members and teachers. * Culture is the deposit of knowledge, experiences, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a large group of people in the course of generations through individual and group experiences. * Culture is a socially constructed and historically transmitted pattern of symbols, meaning, premises, and rules (Newman, 1998, p. 231). Every race and every ethnicity has its own culture. In fact, one finds different cultures between and among regions within any nation, including the United States. This is one of the issues that is involved in selecting teaching strategies or styles when one is faced with a multi-ethnic, multi-racial classroom. Research consistently reports that children begin establishing attitudes regarding cultural differences very early in life. Their early experiences play a significant role in influencing their cultural understandings.
