One of the most serious problems associated with domestic violence is that which concerns women who ultimately fight back and harm, or kill, their spouses out of self defense. In the past such women have been treated as serious criminals as the judicial system never took into serious consideration the realities they faced every day as they feared for their lives. Such women are not a threat to society and they should not be deemed as such by the judicial system. The following paper first examines the realities of women who suffer from domestic violence and then examines and argues how the courts should be far more lenient with women who are guilty of murdering their husbands due to the nature of the treatment they have received. Women and Domestic Violence In first looking at the realities that many women of domestic violence face we present the story of one particular woman. This woman, "Valerie Boyd met her husband, Kermit Bob Boyd, a 52-year-old alcoholic, when she was 18" (Talvi, 2005). Valerie had grown up in an abusive family and had experienced molestation from the time she was 9 by her stepfather (Talvi, 2005). As is perhaps often the case with young women who are victims of domestic violence, Valerie took the first escape from her family that she could find and this was in her marriage to Bob (Talvi, 2005). They had been married for 6 months when Bob began to abuse Valerie: "Bob verbally and physically abused me on a regular basis...He typically beat me with his fists and feet.
