II. BACKGROUND The Nine Years War - also known as King Williams War, the War of the Grand Alliance, War of the League of Ausburg and War for the English Succession - was instigated by Count Palatines death; inasmuch as there was no designated successor, the lawyers of King Louis XIV took it upon themselves to appoint him recipient of the throne. The invasion that ensued as a direct result of this appointment involved a number of countries, not the least of which included the Spanish, Dutch and English. The Treaty of Ryswick brought the war to an end but not before nine long years of battle would constitute domestic, financial and war policies that ultimately impacted current and future foreign policy. Look upon as the "first episode in the long contest between England and France" (Hiller PG), the Nine Years War was the result of significant - and many say unwanted - change. King William III and Queen Mary held court with equal authority over England in 1688; historical records indicate that the primary reason he took the title was for the opportunity to establish England "an active ally in his struggle against Louis XIV of France" (Hiller PG).
