It is a doctrine that involves many different fields in medicine, and many different situations. The following paper examines the Doctrine of Informed Consent. Doctrine of Informed Consent In better understanding the doctrine it is important to first look at various definitions or descriptions. One author notes that it "means that a physician must present the patient with alternatives, along with information about the pros and cons of the alternatives, and then proceed with the option that the patient selects" (Mehlman, 1999). Another author indicates that a doctor or a therapist must provide information concerning "the nature of the treatment or procedure, the risks, the benefits, the alternatives" (Consumers Guide to Online Mental Health Care, 2004). In essence, the focus or purpose of the doctrine is to inform a patient and get their consent to treatment before anything is done. In relationship to where it originated one author indicates the following: "Informed consent is a legal doctrine that has been developed by the courts over a number of years. The doctrine of informed consent may have been derived from the Nuremberg Code, which required that doctors obtain the voluntary informed consent of the subject prior to conducting medical experimentation" (NOCIRC, 2006). The Nuremberg Code originated in 1947 and appears to be a code developed following WWII and the atrocities carried out on people during the war without any consent.
