The old correspondence school has gained new life with the advent of the Internet, but with greatly extended "richness" and "reach" (Weigel, 2000). These online programs are not an alternative for those who simply cannot make it in class, but rather are designed for adults who have specific goals and limited available time. Many online programs lacked uniformity or quality in past years, but todays programs are much more focused and purposeful. To a great degree, advancement in the quality and scope of learning management systems can be credited with much of that shift. The Trend toward Online Learning The newest twist in the distance learning of today is that many old, established and respected universities are offering many courses online; several even offer complete degrees. Some offer single, special-interest classes as well as degree programs, while others limit their offerings to full degree programs only. Duke Universitys MBA program is one of the most respected in the country, and it is known for its innovation. It was offering weekends-only classes for working professionals as long as 15 years ago. Today, students are not required to maintain such geographical proximity. Chris Colbert, president of a Boston advertising agency, is enrolled in Dukes online MBA program. For a total tuition of $95,000, Colbert does most of his work online and on the weekends.
