of Medicine report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care, claims that medical studies document a systematic causal relationship between race and disparities in health inputs and outcomes among individuals of different races" (p.S15). In fact, the idea that blacks and Latinos are discriminated against in health care has been given much attention by media as well (Bloche, 2005). Some also suggest that women of color are discriminated against by the welfare system that does not adequately address birth control issues (Hooton, 2005). Yet, not only is there institutional racism as it concerns people of color, but there is discrimination in respect to gender, age and well being. An example of discrimination goes to the idea that transplant patients cannot receive an organ if they for example smoke or drink. Much is dependent upon the situation, but certainly moral judgments are made and people are discriminated against all the time. Physicians sometimes refuse to treat patients who have a condition that is worsened by their addictions. This means that while patients are perhaps doing harm to themselves, they are not adequately treated. Other populations that many would think would not face discrimination do. One would in fact think that older people with disabilities would get the best of care. However, the reality is that many elderly people who have disabilities find that the face an extreme amount of prejudice as well as discrimination (Sheets, 2005). Thus, they have difficulty accessing social services and the health care system (Sheets, 2005). It is also true that in some cases, the complaints of the elderly are dismissed and physicians are not quick to treat patients who are close to death anyway.
