period of marked change in the views of Muslim women in Indonesia, cultural views were shaped by the influences of print media, and this form of media was used to express revolutionary ideas, instill values and create messages of methods to improve family life. In the modern era, print media is all but replaced by media presented via digital technology, and the mass media programming, computer-based publications and the use of technology in general has transformed both the mode and content of gender-specific messages within the dominant Muslim culture of Indonesia. One of the conflicts that emerges, though, when considering the implications of the views of women in the Muslim culture of Indonesia is whether the views presented reflect global understanding or if they are state-controlled and used to foster a family-centric ideal that continues to subjugate women. The Background Brenner (1999, 13) provided a view of information that had bee presented in a 1959 article in Trisula magazine, a magazine that was created for Indonesian women, that focused on family life and the ideals that the government supported in relation to the role of women. Though the period had been marked by some political efforts to introduce reforms that addressed gender roles and a range of problems for women, the "New Order" regime under Suharto focused on mass media messages that put women in their place, defining their role in society and the importance of their efforts to maintain a stable home life.
