as an invading force that subjugated them, brutalized them, and obliterated their culture. When regarding any period of history, theres not just one story, but multiple ways of relating
and looking at the same events. This is also true in regards to the American colonial rule in the Philippines. There is the "official" story that emphasizes the altruistic
endeavors of the US government to bring democratic self-rule to the Filipino people, and, there is also the perspective on these events that recounts the hidden agenda of the US
government toward the Philippines. Both accounts of the reasons for the American rule in the Philippines are true, its just that they are told from different perspectives. The
Official Story Prior to American rule, the Philippines were ruled by the Spanish for over three centuries, from 1565 to 1898 (Bunge PG). A Westernized Filipino elite developed toward the
end of the nineteenth century due to the development of the economy and because of greater contact with the outside world. This elite was referred to as the "ilustrados," which
means the "enlightened ones" (Bunge PG). The ilustrados began to demand that native Filipinos be given a greater voice in their own government and that more Filipino priests be included
in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic parishes (Bunge PG). A revolutionary movement, the Katipunan, formed in 1892 and they initiated a revolt against Spanish rule that called for total
independence. The Treaty of Paris that concluded the Spanish-American War was signed on December 10, 1898. This document transferred control of the Philippines from the Spanish to the Americans. The
