Furthermore, skeptics as to Pauls authorship have argued that this letter does not follow Pauls usual epistolary style as established in other letters, as Ephesians can be described as a "solemn oration" and therefore not a "true letter," but rather a work that verges poetry.1 It has been referred to as the "crown in St. Pauls writing" and verses from Ephesians constitute some of the most inspiring and popular in the New Testament.2 As this letter is so inspiring, it is naturally of interest to Christians as to whether or not Paul did pen this epistle. Therefore, the following examination of literature seeks to establish the details of the arguments concerning Pauls authorship, both pro and con, in order to draw a reasoned conclusion based on scholarly thought and historical evidence. General background and structure: Biblical scholarship did not question the Pauls authorship of Ephesians until the late eighteen century.3 F.C. Bauer established the parameters of this debate, which has been definitively settled; however, it is true that the majority of critical scholarly opinion supports Bauers view.4 Scholars who take the view that Paul did not write Ephesians cite the following reasons: 1. Language. Ephesians includes a number of words not found in other Pauline letters; 2. Style. The first half of the Letter, especially, has a full and lofty style, unlike other Pauline letter; 3. Theology. The Letters view of Christ is cosmic in scope and the authors understanding of the Church, too, is advanced; (and) 4. Colossians.
