hearing about digital radios, digital phones, digital this and that. We read that digital technology is transforming or establishing the global workplace, bringing people closer than ever before; in some cases digital technology is eliminated specific job classifications and creating new ones (Elmer-Dewitt, 1995). For many, digital means nothing more than a clock that shows the time in numbers as opposed to big and little hands traveling by seconds around a dial. But there is a lot more to it. A digital signal is one "unit of information expressed as a number or as a numerical representation" (Cone, 1991; p. 4). Digital signals send messages using a smaller number of well-defined very discrete symbols to "describe all of the attributes and measurements of an entity and to transmit messages (Cone, 1991; p. 4). The limited symbols produces interference-free transmissions that are also free of background noise. Binary numbers are most commonly used in computers and other high tech instruments. The transmissions are easily duplicated (Cone, 1991). While more and more businesses are using digital signals, the analog system, which uses electrical waves is also still used heavily used today. Analog systems are not limited in their shapes and forms, which is why there is more background noise and interference with their transmissions. Two other examples of analog items and their digital counterparts are: an LP record vs. a compact disc and a photograph vs. a digitized image. Computers are digital, using a binary number system. There are distinct advantages of the digital signal; for one thing, it can be copied accurately which is critical in many communication devices since the end signal will be as clear ...
