Essay / Research Paper Abstract

This 3 page paper looks at three questions using different types of data to assess appropriate statistical tests. These include the use of paired samples with a small sample size and assessment of the differences between two unpaired samples. Several different statistical tests are discussed. The bibliography cites 2 sources.

inappropriate test can result in a flawed conclusion. Looking at the methodology with the collection of statistical data on the academic achievement of students from two institutions using pre-existing sources and considering the questions, appropriate statistical methods may be identified. The first question is to assess the impact that the freshmen academy has on ninth grade students by assessing the percentage of students retained in the year. The data is being collected from two institutions so there are two samples which need to be compared. As the data is being collected between the years 2005 - 2010, this will give six years of data. With two samples; the freshman academy and Kennedy High School this is a test to compare two samples. There are different ways that this may be analysed. There may be the use of descriptive statistics, to compare the percentage of retained students in each institution over each year. This can also be displayed in graph format, and may indicate any trends that are present. However although useful in initially assessing the data and indicating potential patterns, and able to provide a visual image of the data which can be very useful in a report, the statistical value is limited as the results are inconclusive as they cannot be subjected to an hypothesis test. The statistical test chosen needs to reflect the data type collected. As the data for each institution is taken each year, this can be assessed as a paired sample. The test needs to assess the differences between the two samples to assess whether or not they are statistically different. The default test for a paired sample is a paired T-Test. However, with only six years to compare the size of the sample is relativity small for use in a T-Test. Therefore, ...
