novel that speaks of the troubles experienced by individuals during WWII, and clearly speaks of corruption and the ultimate power that the government/military has over an individuals life and identity. It is a novel about death and fear as well as a novel that examines ones loyalty to ones nation. The following paper examines Chapter 35. While there are many chapters in this novel that illustrate one sort of culmination or another concerning particular themes, this chapter illustrates how the desire for power, which includes money, is one of the most destructive forces there is. Desire for Power in Catch -22 by Heller As mentioned, there are many moments throughout this novel that seem to present a sort of culmination or a critical moment in relationship to a theme or plot. But, there are also other moments that are defining in their own way. In this particular chapter, chapter 35, the reader becomes more aware of the desire for power, as well as the desire for money. One of the main characters, Milo, has a moment where his true desire for money and power are perhaps more fully culminated than one sees in chapter 35 but in this chapter the reader sees his desire for money coupled with the desire for power possessed by the officers in a way that is very defining. With an understanding of the importance of this chapter stated it is also important to establish what has come before, events and characters that further demonstrate the culmination of plot elements seen in this particular chapter. The main character of Yossarian is a friend of Milos and he is, and perhaps always has been, sick of the war and of the missions that have constantly been increased by the officers, mainly Colonel Cathcart.
