while tourists are still sleeping off their hangovers, looks like the moon with footprints resembling craters. It is the beginning of a world full of promise. The beach at 6 a.m. is an empty canvas upon which any bold hopes or passionate dreams can be painted. There is pearly white sand for as far as the eye can see; feeling it between the toes at this time of morning is like a soft caress. The tide is slowly inching its way back to the shore. In the distance, a school of dolphins is frolicking in the surf. They are splashing water on each other and the high-pitched noises they make sound like giggles. At around 10 a.m., still-groggy tourists and dedicated sun worshippers make their way to these magical surroundings to drink in the scenery while catching some rays. Soon, it becomes a logistic battle of where to position the beach blanket to get the best direct sun (after applying plenty of sunscreen first, of course). With the timer set, I stretch out on my back and listen to the roar of the waves inching ever closer to the shore. It is an incredibly restful sound, and one I try to focus on like a spiritually therapeutic meditation. But there are other sounds also competing for attention, like tinny portable radio stations that are playing either rap or 80s punk. Still, those strains combined with the pulsating waves sound like a symphony between man and nature. I smile as I listen, remembering to turn onto my stomach after 20 minutes.
