Von Huben 12/2010 Please Introduction Daoism and Zen Buddhism are two of the major Eastern religions. This paper briefly summarizes each and considers the concept of the "no-mind" as discussed by Sixth Patriarch Hui-neng. Discussion Daoism: Daoism is indigenous to China and is one of the countrys major religions; its primary belief is in "learning and practicing "The Way" (Dao) which is the ultimate truth to the universe" (Chiu). Daoism is also known as "Taoism," and traces its roots to the 6th century BC philosopher Laozi (Chiu). The main tenets of Daoism describe a way of looking at the world that sees it as a balance: the "Dao" or "The Way" is the ultimate truth, but more than that, it is "the basis of all living things, it governs nature, and it is a method to live by" (Chiu). Daoists see things as interconnected, rather than opposites; they "do not believe in extremes," an idea exemplified by the Yin-Yang symbol (Chiu). The two halves are in balance: the black is the Yin and is associated with "weakness and passivity" while the white is the Yang, which is associated with "strength and activity" (Chiu). But the two are never considered separately, they always join to form a whole and balance each other (Chiu). Daoism finds itself in conflict with Buddhism in several regards. First, it does not regard life as suffering, but argues that it is "generally happy," but should be lived with "balance and virtue" (Chiu).
