As the facts unraveled, it was determined that the boys had been under the supervision of the Division of Youth and Family Services in New Jersey - and in fact, the organization had case files on this familys history, which included 10 years of allegations of abuse and neglected levied against the boys mother and other caretakers (State of New Jersey, 2003). Yet DYFS workers had closed the files on the case and never fully investigated the abuse of the children (State of New Jersey, 2003). Unfortunately, the story of Faheem Williams isnt uncommon; many children slip through the cracks at various DYFS through the country. Part of it is due to an overwhelmed and overworked social services staff. Another part of it is outdated technology that is not very good at tracking such cases or helping prepare data for them. To put it bluntly, the DYFS service delivery system for children is fragmented and unorganized, among other problems (State of New Jersey, 2003). Stronger technology and a more sophisticated system could help at least better organize the department (although issues of inexperienced social workers and lack of checks and balances is another issue). Although we havent been able to find much information pertaining to technology that various DYFS departments are using, we can assume its likely outdated and probably somewhat cumbersome, given the inefficiencies of many of these departments.
