McAleese and Hargie (2004) note, in their article, in fact, that communications is among the top five guiding principles of corporate management. Communication with employees, they point out, helps develop the proper culture for an organization to meet goals and objectives (McAleese and Hargie, 2004). In fact, in one survey that involved executives and their mistakes, most of them acknowledged that their largest mistakes as supervisors involved a lack of communication (Messmer, 2005). In this paper, well provide an overview of communications in the business sector. Well define it, examine it theoretically and attempt to discuss where, in the literature, communication is used in real world business settings. Rue and Byars put forward a fairly straightforward definition of communication, by noting that "communication is the act of exchanging information" (p. 38). Beyond that definition, communication is used to exchange information, to help instruct, to help influence and even, at times, persuade and give orders. Communication, the authors point out, is a definite supervisory skill as well, as it must give direction, motivate people, take in ideas and persuade as well. This is where interpersonal communication, or rather, communication between individuals (such as supervisors and employees) comes in so handy. In this regard, interpersonal communication is defined as "an interactive process between individuals that involves sending and receiving verbal and nonverbal messages" (p. 40).
