people manage to show up every so often to help define the term greatness and some have the term greatness thrust upon them, whether they wanted it or not. Be that as it may be, quite possibly one of the greatest influences and musical groups today would be the Dave Matthews Band. In music one can consider that those who stick out in mankinds history and have been labeled as great ones have been those who produced wonderful music, without doubt, but also were those who tended to do something which progressed their field further in some way. Mozart, for example, improved upon many forms which were already being utilized and moved Opera into a new era. His symphonies pushed the envelope in virtuosity, style, and range. Chopin, with his dark and moody melodies, to Elvis with his wildly gyrating hips and rhythms, have all managed to move music forward in some way. Given this first criteria, then, the Dave Matthews Band could be considered great. What is most interesting is that this band formed in an almost reckless abandon. Matthews was a down and out musician, like most musicians begin (and some end). Having arrived to America in his teens from South Africa, he brought with him innovative rhythms, harmonies and lyrics which were highly influenced by the rhythms of Africa. In this respect, Dave Matthews and his band have managed to move Rock and Roll into a new evolution. Secondly, they succeeded when others condemned their uniqueness. The band made and sold records from their own band offices, not with some major label, when they first began.
