Government: China is a Communist nation. The government is comprised of the Presidency; the State Council; the National Peoples Congress; the Central Military Commission; the Supreme Peoples Court and the Supreme Peoples Procuratorate (The Central Peoples Government of the Peoples Republic of China, 2006). The chief of state is President Hu Jintao, who has been in office since March 15, 2003 (China, 2007). The Vice President is Zeng Qinghong who was elected the same day (China, 2007). The head of government is Premier Wen Jiabao, who took office on March 16, 2003; the Vice Premier is Hui Liangyu; he assumed office March 17, 2003 (China, 2007). The president and vice president are elected by the National Peoples Congress, not by direct election; they serve a five year term and are eligible for re-election to a second five-year term (China, 2007). The next presidential elections are slated for mid-March 2008 (China, 2007). The president nominates the premier, who is then confirmed by the National Peoples Congress (China, 2007). Hu won the election with 2,937 votes "(4 delegates voted against him, 4 abstained, and 38 did not vote); ZENG Qinghong elected vice president ... with a total of 2,578 votes (177 delegates voted against him, 190 abstained, and 38 did not vote); 2 seats were vacant" (China, 2007).
