Eventually, his family would receive political asylum in the United States and settle in San Jose, California, where he would enjoy a successful career as a physician before pursuing his passion for writing. For anyone familiar with Hosseinis debut novel, The Kite Runner, these details are like d?j?-vu, because they seem to mirror the novels protagonist Amir. Hosseini combined his love for epic adventures with his firsthand knowledge of Afghanistans class struggles during the 1970s to create a memorable best-seller that was transformed into a successful film in 2007. 2. Summary The Kite Runner is the story of relationships - those of Amir and his father Baba, of Amir and his friend/servant Hassan, and also of the class tensions that historically existed in Afghanistan. It begins with Amirs childhood in the Afghan capital of Kabul as a privileged boy who wanted for nothing and continues through the downfall of the monarchy, which led to a dramatic escape for father and son to California. Meanwhile, Hassan and the members of his class are not so lucky; they remain in Afghanistan under Soviet rule and then later are subjected to the tyranny of the Taliban regime during the 1980s. After Amir and Baba settle into a lower-middle class wife, Baba plans the arranged marriage of Amir to Soraya, the daughter of a one-time Afghan general.
