Our concerns over health and wellness dictate a great number of our behavioral practices. One of the more common behaviors is the consumption of all sorts of nutritional supplements in hopes that they will improve some aspect of our physical well being. According to the supplement being consumed, however, there is often little medical evidence as to its effectiveness. Some nutritional substances, in fact, are surrounded by controversy as to whether or not they may be more deleterious in its effects than advantageous. One of the most controversial of these substances is creatine. My interest in creatine relates to its possible benefits in building muscle mass, and interest which has heightened with my observations of athletes involved in physical pursuits such as weight lifting. Athletes, it seems, often go to what seems extraordinary lengths to gain a competitive edge in their performance. Despite my concerns to the contrary, however, the use of creatine as a nutritional supplement might be considered one of the least deleterious practices pursued by these athletes and may actually result in some forms of athletic performance. I would continue to caution, however, that athletes considering the use of the substance do so with extreme caution as there are no long-term studies testifying to the absence of long-term deleterious effects.
