their "religion." They say, if they like junk food, that chocolate is part of their religion. They use the term loosely sometimes, but by and large the word is used to denote a belief system that is commonly used such as Christianity or Islam. In the world today, some of these religions have taken headlines. With the recent war on terrorism, much attention is paid to Islam and the war in the Middle East between the Jews and the Arabs. People begin to analyze the two religions of Judaism and Islam and speculate as to who should get the land. Indeed, religion is not just representative of pie in the sky ideas, or just beliefs associated with the Holy Bible. Religion also has to do with culture. In fact, culture is a large part of religious heritage today. People associate themselves with a people. They are part of the Jewish or Christian or Muslim people and share a certain history. Jews trace their roots back to the First Testament, as that is what those books are based upon, and they also share a history of persecution. For example, the Holocaust was an attack on Christians, and homosexuals, but it largely took the lives of Jewish people and so all Jews to some extent can identify with that. Other religions have similar long terms roots as well such as Buddhism and one can suggest that there are cultural beliefs and associations attached to that also. In western society today, Buddhist precepts are integrated into mainstream culture. People are no longer ostracized for speaking of karma, a terms that has crept into the American vernacular.
