It can cause many problems never before perceived and it can ultimately bring a family closer together or drive them further apart. Dealing with the reality of a terminal illness in a loved one is also something that medical professionals can help with as they can serve as an outside, or objective, force which enables loved ones to better handle the situations. The following paper first looks at the problems associated with coping styles, what the literature has to say about the various possibilities and conditions, and lastly the essay examines the role of the nurse in such situations. The Problem The nature and scope of caring for a loved one suffering from a terminal illness is quite diverse and complex. It also depends on what the terminal illness is, in relationship to how families cope with the problem. For example, a family dealing with a loved one who is slowly dying from cancer, and who perhaps has Alzheimers Disease as well, will be very different from loved ones dealing with a family member who has AIDS. And, dealing or coping with an elderly loved one who is terminally ill is different from dealing with a child who is terminally ill. In light of all the possibilities coping styles as it relates to the nature and scope of the issue are quite diverse. In terms of generalizing the possibilities, family members caring for a terminally ill person may feel resentful if they are taking on, or feel they are taking on, more responsibilities than someone else.
