School officials are interested in finding out what attracted the student to this field and what talents and skills the student brings to this field that will facilitate future success. Therefore, the student may wish to begin his/her essay something like this: "The field of student affairs first began to attract my attention when I worked as a mentor to underprivileged children during high school." Or, the student may have been inspired to enter this field due to the huge influence that a high school or college counselor had on their educational choices. The student might indicate that this experience demonstrated the huge influence that the right advice at the right moment in time can have on the direction that a young life takes. In addition to why the student want to go into the field of school administration, school officials are undoubtedly also interested in what the student would bring to this profession. The student should therefore realistically assess his or her abilities and aptitudes. It may be that the student is of an ethnic or racial origin that is out of the mainstream, European-descended American culture and can therefore offer a diverse student body the insights that come from this background.
