the potential for long-term repercussions. Homeschooling, an alternative to traditional education, has been supported by many religious and social organizations. But the effectiveness of "complete control" for parents
and lax legal requirements for testing should be questioned. Homeschooling is on the rise. While it might be suggested that this shows a greater interest in education by parents,
its more likely that some parents use homeschooling to reduce their responsibilities. After assessing some homeschooling scenarios, I saw substantial variations in the quality of homeschooling taking place.
After contacting the homeschooling director at the Lane County ESD, I found that homeschooling has created as many problems as it has resolved. Though there is extensive support
for homeschooling, there are also parents who use homeschooling as a way of reducing their liability for their childrens truancy. Though efforts to create a more lax system extended
from religious lobbying, the legislative change has had negative impacts. In 1999, religious lobbyists supported the passage of legislation to reduce the testing requirements for homeschooled children. These efforts
gave greater control to parents for their childrens educational progress, reducing government interaction. While many homeschooled children fair very well in this environment, there is evidence that problem children
simply fall through the cracks. Parents are able to "sign" their children "out" of public education with claims of homeschooling and then often do not follow up with assessments.
There is a distinct need to consider the approach the government has taken towards homeschooling. The lax nature of controls and the power put into the hands
