They were both nations that were colonized, to some extent, by the British and they were both nations that received their independence from Britain simultaneously (Background to India and Pakistan conflict). The conflicts between the two revolve around many different issues that relate to society, politics and perhaps most of all religion. The following paper examines the history of the conflicts today and then examines the conflicts, with a focus on the conflicts that arise from the Muslim and Hindu faith. History and Conflict In looking to history, the history of the 19th century, we first note that the regions of Jammu and Kashmir were brought under Sikh rule in the early part of the 19th century (BBC). The British troops fought and took over in 1846 but they did not take direct control of the region, putting in place a Hindu ruler instead (BBC). The Hindu ruler, the Maharaja, possessed much territory, including "the Buddhist area of Ladakh, the predominantly Hindu region of Jammu, the majority Muslim valley of Kashmir, as well as smaller Muslim kingdoms in the west" (BBC). In the 1930s came the notion of a newly named region, and the name Pakistan came from an idea one man, Chaudhuri Rahmat Ali, possessed. He believed that a separate homeland should exist that would be primarily comprised of "Muslim-majority provinces in the north-west as well as the geographically contiguous princely state of Jammu and Kashmir" (BBC).
