Symphony No. 99 and Tchaikovskys Symphony #2" ("Welcome"). In the instructors guidelines, it is emphasized that the student should describe what it was like to go to this concert. With this in mind, the student may choose to express begin his/her description something like the following: There was a sense of expectancy and excitement in the air as the audience took their seats. People chatted among themselves, as they browsed their programs. The feeling was somehow similar to that of a home town crowd preparing to cheer for their team. Everyone wanted to see their orchestra do well. The first selection was Iron Diamond by Kristin Kuster. This work was commissioned by the Plymouth Symphony, where Nan Washburn is the Music Director, in 2005 to celebrate that organizations 60th anniversary (Kuster). At that time, Washburn specifically indicated to the composer that the music should "celebrate the historical and current presence of trains in Plymouth, Michigan" (Kuster). The composer spent time in the city of Plymouth in order to get a sense of what trains meant to the people there and she states that she tried to convey the feeling of trains without actually using train sounds (Kuster). Kusters music largely succeeds in achieving this goal in that there is an intense emphasis on rhythm in this work that conveys a sense of motion and urgency. However, there is also quite a bit of dissonance and the harmony is difficult to discern. It sounded to me as if the orchestra was struggling with the intricacies of this work and that detracted from the music in that, as a listener, I found myself considering the plight of the performers, rather than focusing solely on the music.
