SA121fe.doc Sometimes works of literature reflect a culture so much so that the expeirnce can be lifechanging. They provide a richness to orindary Western life. Many begin to question their own bleifes and values as a result. "The Breast Giver" by Mahasweta Devi and "Death of the Kings horseman" by Wole Soyinka are two such stories. In "The Breast Giver" The female protagonist Jashoda nurses her employers chidrlen. Althoguh wet nurses are no longer appreciated in todays society, it was not that uncommon in the time and place in which this story was written. Yet, Jashoda did not use her breasts matter of factly. It was not something she wanted to do necessarily, but she did this in order to make money. She needed money and while nursing is a noble thing, she had been using her breasts to earn income. Breastfeeding is in fact part of the sexual system. It is personal and many do not believe that such feeding is appropriate. Today, when women nurse hteir babies, a personal relaitonshiip grows that differs from the relationship she has with her husband. However, the closeness of each of her personal relationships are in fact enhanced through her breasts. By using her breasts to gain income, Jashoda is compromising other relaitonshps. She is beign used and is using her body to put food on the table. In contempaory soicety, many female exotic dancers claim that they are only in the business for the money. Yet, while they may be able to make more money through exposing body parts, than other pursuits, they are also being exploited. While dancing to entertain men seems seedy, ...
