Their subject matter and style of writing are quite different although both unique and powerful in their own way. However, there do seem to be subtle similarities as well. The following paper compares and contrasts the two works. Beckett and Marquez Becketts story is a play, quite different from Marquezs which is a novel. In this difference one can readily note that Becketts story does not have inner dialogue and there is primarily only dialogue between characters. Marquezs work presents many thoughts, many internal images, and is generally a story involving a great deal of imagery that can not be obtained through reading a play. In terms of plot, Becketts has no real plot. It is the story of two men who generally sit on a bench waiting for someone named Godot to arrive. Godot never arrives and these two men never really do anything but wait. Even when they are told by a character that Godot will not be showing up that day, they continue to sit there doing nothing. In Marquezs story the reader is immediately introduced to the man who will be killed. "On the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on" (Marquez 1). This story essentially seeks to uncover the ultimate death of Santiago who is seen as the man who violated the virginity of a young bride. The story is an examination of the human spirit and mind as several people know that Santiago will die, and many could actually help prevent the murder.
