Two works that offer a very good foundation for comparison and contrast are the Head of a Roman Patrician and a Mummy portrait from Faiyum. The following paper examines these pieces, comparing and contrasting the two. Comparison/Contrast of Ancient Art While the two pieces of art being examined are from different time periods, considering that they were produced almost 2 thousand years ago puts them in a relatively similar place in time, separated by perhaps only around 200 years. But, this also indicates that the time period was also very different. The Head of a Roman Patrician was created around 75-50 BC while the Mummy portrait was created around 160-170 CE (Mummy Portrait of Faiyum; Head of a Roman Patrician). Interestingly enough, it seems that they are also both from around the same location, though clearly different foundational cultures. One author, for example, notes that, in relationship to mummy paintings, "The surviving paintings are predominantly from the Fayum region in Roman Egypt, where the practice was common and the dry heat preserved many of the paintings until today" (Economic Experts). Both are clearly made of very different materials. The Head of a Roman Patrician is carved from marble and is thus a three dimensional portrait rather than a two dimensional painting on wood (Head of a Roman Patrician). An artist can get a great more detail into a sculpture than they can get into a painting on wood, painted with wax and pigment (Mummy Portrait of Faiyum). But, with the sculpture there is not the color present that is seen in the Mummy portrait which is rich and deep ...
