Examples of discrete trial training INTRODUCTION Autism in a child can many times be helped through communication training, using social stories and discrete trial training. In this paper all three methods are discussed as to the current trends in research and communication with children with autism. Outline is included. COMMUNICATION TRAINING There has recently, in the past few years, been seen to be some success in the use of communication training in children with autism. The use of "augmentative and alternative communication strategies" (Frea, Arnold et al, 2001, PG) has been used with more and more success in children with autism both in the classroom setting and at home. This communication training combines the use of pictures and making choices so that the autistic child is more readily able to communicate his or her needs in a way that is beneficial to both teacher and child. Within only the last ten years has this communication training been developed to the point that it is deemed acceptable and useful in communicating with autism (Cafiero 2001). By using words, pictures and other natural symbols in communication techniques it is possible to get the autistic child to interact with those around him or her. Showing the pictures on the board and then saying the words aloud teach the child the meaning and language of communication. In order to facilitate this learning procedure every person in the childs environment needs to make use of this visual learning stimulus using the same techniques as everyone else in the childs circle of support (Cafiero 2001).
