In real life, restaurant management incorporates a bit of know how in terms of communicating with customers, being able to write a simple advertisement or converse with copywriters, and using communication skills to coordinate the various services and supplies needed to run a restaurant or inn. Interestingly, while verbal and written communication is paramount in the business, nonverbal communication can be important as well. An interview with Keith Reinhard reveals that logos are important and this food service executive claims that Western cultures do not place enough emphasis on icons or nonverbal forms or communication ("Fundamental" 37). He adds that the Japanese tend to be suspicious of words as there are so many interpretations of them (37). Pictures or icons are quite clear in meaning and the executive suggests studying these a bit more (37). Yet, while logos and such are a nice addition to a menu, or on a glass window, restaurant or hotel managers need written communication skills for a variety of purposes. One obvious reason why a restaurateur would need writing skills is to create menus. Menus do help to create a restaurants ambiance as well as level of sophistication (Parseghian 40).
