Coming to Terms with Female Juvenile Offenders Research Compiled by 11/2010 Please Juvenile crime is a very real problem in this country and, in fact, the world over. Although they are typically less frequently represented in the criminal justice system, females are involved in a substantial percentage of those crimes. The thesis can be presented however that, because of the societal misperceptions surrounding females who commit crimes, the criminal justice system is less prepared to deal with this facet of crime. We tend to pretend that female perpetuated crime does not exist or, alternatively, to view those girls that do perpetuate these crimes as pure evil. Either view is not the most effective for dealing with the problem that we have at hand. It is important to acknowledge that female juveniles do indeed commit crimes. That said, it is also important to acknowledge the fact that they do so less frequently than do male juveniles. Lynch (2002) reports that for the period between 1980 and 1998 "the arrest rate for male juveniles was 6.6 times that for female juveniles-8.6 per 1,000 and 1.3 per 1,000 respectively". Lynch (2002) notes, however, that the overrepresentation of arrests of male juveniles for serious violent crimes has decreased over time.
