War II spanned a six year period between September 1, 1939 (the date of Germanys invasion of Poland) and September 2, 1945 (the date of the Japanese surrender). It was realized even at the time of the U.S. decision to enter the War that it would be a war which would probably result in more long-term and far-reaching socio-political and socio-cultural consequences than any other war in history. Military strategy was one of the most important components of determining both the length of the war and the extent of its impact on our society. The combined bomber offensive was one of the most effective of those strategies. An analysis of the combined bomber offensive will reveal both the strengths and weaknesses of military strategy during World War II, however. Such an analysis is critical in understanding not just the circumstances of this war but also in perfecting future military strategy. The thesis can be presented that: Neither the British component of the combined bomber offensive of World War II nor the American component can be credited more with the ultimate Allied success in World War II. While both had their strengths, both also had their weaknesses. It was the combined effort that finally brought our enemies to their knees. This strategy, although somewhat accidental, was both a reflection of the integral relationship that existed between the weaponry that was at our disposal and the relative philosophies of how to most effectively retaliate against our enemies.
