and turbulent history marked by different revolutions. It was initially named New Spain, by Cortes who landed there in 1519. Conquistadors from Spain were plentiful for the next 300 years. New Spain eventually extended north to what is now the Canadian/United States border. It also included all of the territory west of the Mississippi River. The area that is now Washington and Oregon were not under Spains control ( Weil 1991; Brief History 1995). During Mexicos long quest for freedom from Spain, Agustin de Iturbide, a retired military leader, was appointed to fight against rebel Vicente Guerrero and his followers. Instead of fighting against him Iturbide joined his cause. Together they announced the Plan de Iguala. Geurrero and Iturbide had met in Iguala and simply named their plan after the location of their meeting. The Plan was based on three principles: Independence, Religion, and Equality. Mexico would declare its independence from Spain and become its own monarchy; the official religion would be Roman Catholic; and the all people in new monarchy, regardless of race, would be equal. The new Viceroyal from Spain never took office. Iturbide and Guerrero had accomplished their goal: Mexico was independent of Spain. Iturbride was welcomed to the city as a hero in July 1821. (Weil 1991). Iturbride declared himself Emperor of Mexico in 1822. Despite the fact that the country was in shambles and financial ruin, following ten years of war, Iturbride established an extensive budget for his support. This act angered the peasants and another revolt occurred. This one was led by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna supported by Guerrero and other rebel forces.
