to this country the fates of it, and the people that originally inhabited it, were sealed. The colonial ideas of expansionism impacted land and Native peoples alike. The culture clash that resulted was one that in many ways still rages on to this day. The contrast that existed between the so called "wilderness" and the European idea of utility was reflected not just in European interaction with Native Americans but also in European interaction with the land itself. Pohl (2002, pg. 134) writes: "Americas vast wilderness came to represent both Gods original creation, untouched by human hands, and the legendary place where human cultivation of the land began". The European idea of cultivation, however, was vastly different from the Native American idea of cultivation. This differences is readily apparent not only in the literature of the time but also in the art. In the landscape of Niagara Falls in "Framing America: A Social History of American Art", for example, the contrast is particularly evident. Although the scene may seem sublime, it can be interpreted as a depiction of contrast between cultures. In the foreground stands the European idea of refinement. Their backs are turned to one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, Niagara Falls. To them they are the center of the universe, the subjects of the artists attention.
