of the major areas of dispute with regard to the Colombian drugs industry and the way in which it is dealt with by the USA is the question of how far the latter is complying with international law, a suitable hypothesis might be that the methods employed in the "war on drugs" are in fact as much a breach of international law as the drugs trade itself is. The student would therefore have to look at the history of drug production in Colombia, the influence which the cartels have on the political and economic infrastructure of the country, the steps taken by the US to combat the drug trade and whether or not the latter are within the parameters of international law.
