China and Confucius Confucius "lived in Lu State (present Qufu City in Shandong Province) during the later part of the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC) when the struggling for the domination of the country grew in intensity. In his young days, he served in the government" (TravelChinaGuide.com, 2003). However, he experienced a great deal of frustration relating to the political thought of his time and retired from an official life at the age of 35. "For the next fourteen years, he traveled from state to state and presented his political idea to different rulers. However no one would listen to him" (TravelChinaGuide.com, 2003). From this we can se that Confucius was a man who perhaps thought differently than most people in his time and culture. He failed at politics and yet was "esteemed as a great teacher and philosopher in history. By the age of 40, he set up an academy to popularize Confucianism and it was said that his students added up to over 3,000" (TravelChinaGuide.com, 2003). During his career as a teacher of many he allowed for "no discrimination on education and carried out among common people school education, which used to be privilege of ruling class...Confucius advocated a set of moral code on basis of five merits: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness" (TravelChinaGuide.com, 2003). This further illustrates that Confucius was a man who changed some of this culture or society. His period of time was very rigid in terms of social structure, and he obviously felt that the system was not correct in discriminating against common people and thus implemented education for all, a very broad minded approach in his time.
