Today though he was quiet and looked like he had lost his best friend. Sally made a decision and hit the buzzer for the guidance counselors office. It was time to investigate. We have all seen it on the news. Reports of child abuse splash across our screens and pipe the horror into our living room, and we sit in outrage at the stories that unfold. However, often times once the TV is turned off and we go about our lives, we push it to the back of our minds and forget about it. But the children who are being beaten, right now, even as this report is being read, cannot forget. They are hiding under beds, they are promising to be good, and they are screaming in terror as they are being struck, burned, belted, and broken by the very people who are supposed to be their protectors. Every year in the United States there are hundreds of thousands of children who are abused (Hwang 1999). A recent issue of JAMA reported that deaths of children under 11-years-old that was due to abuse are grossly under-reported (Hwang 1999).
