This paper discusses why students cheat, some of the ways they cheat, and the consequences of doing so. Discussion Why students cheat: Most students want to do their own work and do well. Contrary to popular myth, not all students go to college to party away four years; they go because they want a good education that will help them get a good job. Or perhaps they simply want to learn more about a field they have an interest in and need to know if that interest will sustain a career. But often, students who enroll in college immediately after high school have absolutely no idea of how difficult the coursework is or much there is to do. Overwhelmed by the demands of a college curriculum, they soon get behind and may consider cheating because they are simply running out of time to complete assignments or remain current with their reading. They are especially worried when it comes to exams. How they cheat: Students may cheat in studying by borrowing someone elses notes rather than doing the reading and research themselves. This robs them of a valuable experience, since learning how to look for and find valid and useful information in a world suffering from information overload is a vital skill. They may cheat on assignments by using professional paper services (had to throw that in there); by finding an excuse for not turning in their work and getting an extension not given to others; or by copying others work. When it comes to cheating on exams, technology has given new meaning to the term "ingenuity."
