perhaps, in many ways considered to be the masters and inventors perhaps of civilized art and architecture. And, while many of us associate much of the Greek artistic history with the Classical period, there were other times in history as well, times that truly show or demonstrate a unique style different from the Classical. In looking at one, the Hellenistic period, we can see unique elements that are clearly part of that time period. The following paper examines some of the characteristics or traits of the Hellenistic period, while mentioning the Classical as well. Hellenistic Style From a historical perspective we note that the face of Greece changed with the death of Alexander the Great. Following his death the empire was essentially dissolved into numerous kingdoms and this "fragmentation was symbolic of the diversity and multiplicity of artistic tendencies in the Hellenistic period" (Hellenistic Art, 2005). In this we see that the Hellenistic style was, perhaps, above all else quite unique and ever-changing in its diverse nature that relied on the numerous art centers. "The great art centers were no longer in mainland Greece but in the islands, such as Rhodes, and the cities in the eastern Mediterranean--Alexandria, Antioch, and Pergamon" (Hellenistic Art, 2005). One subject of art was sculpture, something that was clearly very important to the Greek people throughout history. During the Hellenistic period sculpture took on many different forms. One author notes that to make any kind of generalization about the specifics of this era of sculpting would be difficult because, again, of the diversity (Hellenistic Art, 2005).
