"A Dolls House" (1879) he used the specific example of how women and marriage are seen in "proper" society. The main character, Nora, leaves her husband, Torvald, to find herself. Mrs. Christina Linde, is a widow and a dear friend of Noras ten years earlier. When she shows up on Noras doorstep one day, Nora does not even recognize her because Mrs. Linde has changed so much. Nora tells of her happy life with Torvald and their three children for the last eight years, while Christina speaks of how her deceased husband left her nothing. She has aged far more than the ten years that have gone by because of her unhappy marriage. At one time she was in love with Krogstad, but abandoned him to marry a man with money. Her motives seemed good to her at the time, to help her invalid mother and younger brothers, but her life seems completely futile now. Christina serves as Noras confidante as she explains how she got money from her father to take Torvald to Italy for a year when his health was so bad that he was in danger of death. Christina hopes Torvald can find work for her and Nora is certain he will. Nora then discloses how she borrowed the money for their trip to Italy and has been struggling to pay it back ever since. To Nora, the whole matter is a secret that she jealously guards from her husband. Nora is so na?ve about the loan that she is ignorant even of how much she has so far paid in interest and principal.
