other scenarios the result can be a lost chance and the increase of an impersonal society. There is little effort to change the I-it relationship into an I-you relationship
which may be more rewarding but still fall short of crossing personal boundaries and remain professional. A good example of a usually I-it relationship is that seen in a
restaurant, this is where waiting staff are often not paid attention to as an individual and it can also be hard to initiate an I-you relationship due to the cultural
barriers that are in place, and for some communicators the idea of an individual serving them is more comfortable if they are seen as staff or objects performing a task
rather than individuals. The situation where this is to be tried is at the well known international restaurant chain TGI Fridays. The scenario stared with the ordering, there was
good eye contact but very little communication other than the placement of the order and the choices given by the waitress following the orders given. The pace was not rushed,
but was very efficient, It becomes noticeable at this point how difficult it is to change from the I-it scenario to the I-You relationship as there are barriers in place,
partly caused by the situation and existing expectation, but it is also outwardly reflected, the small hand held unit the waitress places the orders in is also a physical barrier.
The expectation is also on the part of the waitress that this will be an I-It relationship as she is efficient and there is also no attempt at anything more
