The origins of Catholicism can be traced to the Church of Rome, which was dedicated to expand what the Roman Empire believed was its superior religion and its interpretation of Gods word across the globe (Noble). The founder of Catholicism is Jesus Christ, and its doctrine is cemented in the foundation that Peter the Apostle was selected by Christ to spread His Christian message. Another of Jesus disciples, Paul, a Jewish convert to Christianity, was selected to lead followers on a shared quest for spiritual redemption. It is believed that Bishop Ignatius, Father of Antioch and a prot?g? of the Apostle John, first used the term Catholic Church in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (written between 107 and 110 AD). The true purpose of Catholicism has historically been its unified theology that it is "to be the only true church, and everything outside of it is labeled false and branded as heresy" (Noble). Priests are formally ordained to interpret theology and to officiate at at Church rites, with the lead regional priest known as a bishop. As time passed, bishops gained in prominence, with the most powerful Bishop of Rome eventually receiving the preeminent position and title of Pope (papa), which for many Catholics and non-Catholics alike has become the the face of Catholicism.
