The following paper examines one speech of Chavez titled "The Mexican-American and the Church." Ceasar Chavez: His Speech In examining this particular speech we set out to discuss its validity as well as its intent. The discussion focuses on whether or not this speech is a convincing speech and whether or not he presents his case in a plausible manner, based on the necessity of the call or movement that Chavez presented to the people. This particular speech is one that is aimed at approaching the Mexican American and their attitudes as well as involvement as it relates to the Church. The Church was, and is, clearly a very powerful institution in the lives of Mexican and Mexican American people. They are a religious people and thus feel very deeply about their faith and their religious leaders. In light of this the subject matter, the call for Mexican Americans to approach the church, is a very viable approach as well as a very intelligent approach. Chavez argues that the Churchs duty is to help the poor and the downtrodden. The people who followed Chavez were poor and downtrodden. They were workers who rarely got anything from their laboring and Chavez desired that these people stand up and vote and fight for their rights.
