piece together some sort of meaningful reality. Without much at all to her name, the author tells tales of picking through garbage for paper and other remnants that she
can turn into money for her family. As readers consume the sad and depressing accounts of one womans troubled existence, it is easy to remember all the plentitude that
most others are blessed with in this life. It is not difficult to attribute depression to Child of the Dark: The Diary of Carolina Maria De Jesus, inasmuch as the
books entire theme is one of disheartenment and disillusion. The fact that Brazilian De Jesus and her children are forced to subsist in the slums in a cardboard and
wood-scrap shack, with the only means by which to obtain clean water being from a communal cold-water spigot, is a most depressing display of human suffering. There is no
reason in this day and age that people should be condemned to a life of poverty when they display even a modicum of desire to survive, particularly to the lengths
