text entitled The Professional Fence, Klockars introduces readers to the world of organized crime in a manner that is almost uncomfortably intimate. Klockars focuses upon an aspect of organized crime researchers tend to overlook because it lacks the glitz and the glamour of higher-profiled exploits. He elects instead to explore the practice of professional fencing, the storage of stolen property for thieves and other criminals. The fence profits by selling these items to unwitting consumers who are paying retail prices for stolen merchandise, and this large markup of primarily cash transactions generates considerable profits for La Cosa Nostra. Klockars also further narrows his inquiry by featuring only one fence in particular, a 60-year-old dealer in services with the pseudonym of Vincent Swaggi. The author is granted rare access into Swaggis public and private worlds. He walks through the store overflowing with any type of merchandise designed to appeal to any consumer base. There are household appliances, clothing, shoes, toys, electronics, entertainment media items, and even toiletries. But it is Swaggi himself who often occupies center stage in this research inquiry, and his observations about what he does and why are Klockars attempts to understand the workings of the organized crime figures mind and how he can justify his illegal activities. Klockars research is ethnographic in nature in that the criminals habitat and what it represents are placed under close scrutiny. The qualitative research involves first securing the subjects confidence and then gaining frequent access into where the criminal acts are taking place, which in this case would be Swaggis store.
