of "quacks" and nut cases, many patients throughout the U.S., throughout western culture, for that matter, are becoming more and more enamored with going the alternative or complementary medical route, rather than simply relying on conventional medicine. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of CAM? Is this a regulated industry? In this paper, well examine CAM in more detail. Before going any further, however, it would be helpful to define, exactly, what CAM is about. According to the American Association of Physicians Assistants, CAM refers to treatment practices outside the realm of conventional medicine - in other words, those treatments that are not typically or widely practiced by the mainstream medical community (AAPA, 2002). Ironically enough, this definition is pretty broad, so much so that, according to the APA, approximately 70 to 90 percent of health care delivered world wide could be considered alternative medical practice (AAPA, 2002). According to NCCAM, alternative therapies are defined as those used in lieu of conventional therapies, while complementary therapies are used together with conventional medicine. One example of complementary therapy is use of aromatherapy to help a patient reduce discomfort following surgery (NCCAM, 2004). Use of CAM has been controversial in the medical community, especially because some types of CAM are difficult to integrate with others (Nursing Management, 2004). While many medical practitioners can, for example, integrate osteopathy with Chiropractic or other similar physical science, those CAMs that are more of an esoteric or spiritual nature tend to be more at odds with mainstream medicine, mainly because of the "tried and true, needs to see to believe" scientific methods ...
