shootings that see people with an extraordinary need for attention behind the trigger. Workplace violence usually focuses on a disgruntled ex-employee who returns to an original place of business. One case of workplace violence focuses on shooter Michael McDermott who was 42 years of age when he shot seven employees to death (MacQuarrie, 2000). What prompted the shooting? It had been related to the fact that the Internal Revenue Service was about to garnish his salary (MacQuarrie, 2000). This of course involved the personnel department because they had to adhere to the request. Just before the murders, McDermott did in fact become visibly angry about the situation (MacQuarrie, 2000). After he was done shooting, he simply sat in a chair and waited to be arrested (MacQuarrie, 2000). Another incident comes from California where someone who worked at the post office, but on medical leave for a mental condition, would come back and kill five employers before killing herself (Molloy, 2006). She did have known psychological problems (Molloy, 2006). What might account for such behavior? Obviously, no normal person deals with their personal situations in this manner. They do not shoot everyone that they do not like. As there are specific details and causes of different types of violence, workplace violence is attached to more specific causes. Zachary (2000) examines workplace violence and claims that it is an increasing problem in the business world today. Some of the violence is perpetuated by the corporate structure.
