The idea is that the United States fights for liberty and the freedom of the world, but in reality, with economics in mind, it just might be that the U.S. is fighting for oil. The debate has opinions on either side. Is it possible that the current war in the Middle East, and other wars, are really about oil? Some tie the idea to biblical prophesy as there is a admonition not to hurt the oil or the wine, but others simply see the fighting for oil as obvious: there is oil in the Middle East, gas prices are on the rise, and the U.S. has a significant economic interest in the price of oil. When people do claim that there is a fight for oil in the Middle East, many call them conspiracy theorists. There is a sense that suggesting there is a blood for oil campaign is un-American. After all, it is very negative to risk the lives of young people for the sake of monetary gain under the guise of a humanitarian effort or for the true protection of the country.
